The word “blog” came about from the blending of the term web and log. Blogs are related to old media genres such as diaries and hypertext fiction. They are episodic narratives. “When blogs tell stories, they generally do so in an episodic form, with each post being a self-contained unit that contributes to an overall narrative. Each post makes sense in itself, but read together, not necessarily in sequence, the posts tell a larger story”(Rettberg, Jill, Blogging: Digital Media & Society Series).
“Although at first glance, weblogs may appear to be a trivial genre, a laundry list of events and observations elevated to a public spectacle, they exhibit some key characteristics that rhetoric and composition teachers frequently search for in writing and reading assignments” (Johnson-Eiola, The Database and The Essay).
In specific, WordPress is ranked among the top free blog publishing applications and most popular open source content management system. A content management system (CMS) is a platform that enables non-techies to easily create, modify, update, and manage a website. Such database technology also enables the development of blogs through these content-management systems. As Manovich may argue, blogs do not necessarily have a narrative structure (beginning, development, end, etc.) yet they are collections of similar items in a given set of data. Databases allow bloggers to update, edit, search, organize, navigate, and maintain their unstructured data.
A change in writing may also result when being plugged into such giant databases. Johnson-Eiolola even mentioned that writers are becoming more wary of their choices when writing for such databases (prioritizing links, what categories to involve, which one’s to exclude, what order to put the categories in, etc.)
